Thirsty Thursdays: Dracula Blood Beer in Bran, Transylvania, Romania
Thirsty Thursdays: Dracula Blood Beer in Bran, Transylvania, Romania

A Thirsty Thursdays for you all from Bran in Transylvania, Romania. Dracula country conjures up all sorts of gory images. Vlad Tepes, best known as Dracula is the character who impaled his victims back in the day, before Irish novelist Bram Stoker began to write about this lunatic vampire in deepest Romanian countryside. Fictional or not, the reputation enhances the spookiness of your visit to Transylvania.

Once you go there as a backpacker, the quirky touristy face of Transylvania rears its rather welcome head. Welcome? Yes, I liked the touristy aspect of the Dracula land because it’s unique. The locals make a business out of selling masks, teeth, fake blood and all sorts of spooky souvenirs. The tourists lap it all up, and for me I had to try some Dracula Blood Beer!

Where can you buy Dracula Beer?
Well basically anywhere in Transylvania that advertises it. It’s no surprise that it’s well advertised in bars and restaurants as it’s a big seller. Tourists lap it up even though it’s just normal Romanian lager beer with red colouring in it 😉 (You knew that didn’t you?).

I headed to a bar and restaurant called East Village: Sound of Paradise, which was on the corner on the main street in Bran, just before the entrance to Bran Castle itself. Aside from the dracula blood beer, they have a range of draculical and vampirical cocktails and meals available. The Dracula Beer costs 7 Lei for 0.4 litres (that’s about £1.20).

So I ordered it, drank it, realised it was just a normal beer with red colour, but I enjoyed it. I’d still recommend having one, almost like a cliche thing to tick off.

I haven’t written much about Romania yet except for the Bucovina and Cacica adventures, but there will be more to come.

  2. […] 1.Vlad Tepes Head Bust You came all the way to Romania to take a photo and stare at a head bust of a guy who is rumoured to be a vampire? Yes, yes I did. The author of Dracula, Bram Stoker was an Irishman and as I walked through Bucharest’s Old City I couldn’t help but see this head bust staring out at me. As well as this, I also headed to Bran Castle in Dracula country and tried the blood red beer. […]
